Why you need a pain coach

No matter how you look at it, life with chronic pain is hard. A pain coach can make it easier. Endless medical visits with few solid answers. Treatments that are partial solutions. As the weeks, months, and years pass, hope gets hard to hold on to. We often fall into feelings of hopelessness, futility, and add weight and threat to the whole of our lives.

Yet, we continue on. We move forward, facing everything that life throws at us. As a result, we suffer. Our personal lives decline, our joy and hope falter and fail, and we retreat into the confines of the status quo that we’re so used to. It’s easy to allow life to pass us by when we’re so consumed by the hopelessness of solving our pain problem.

That’s the reason why a good pain coach is so important. We often get so ingrained and set in our ways that it’s hard to see things from a fresh perspective. It’s difficult to fathom and digest the possibilities that exist out there in the world when we’re so used to operating within what we’ve deemed “safe” for so long.

What is a Pain Coach?

Everyone knows about coaches for sports. The mentors help an athlete to understand their sport, and perform at the individual’s best. Coaches help an athlete understand a multitude of things, from nutrition, training, sleep, mindset, and more. We intuitively understand that a coach is an expert in the sport, but train the athlete as a whole person.

So, what exactly is a pain coach? It’s not just a mentor. Or just a friend. It’s not just a coach in the most basic sense. A pain coach is a partner, someone who’s there for you through life’s most difficult and challenging times, able to guide you through and help you to see things differently, refine your approach and achieve your loftiest dreams, get back to the life you lost.

Most of us are unaware of our beliefs and behaviors that are holding us back from the very thing we want. Unless we have an objective third party actually point things out to us, we often fail to notice the things that are setting us back. It’s a monumental undertaking to do this by yourself. With that being said, here are 8 reasons why having a pain coach may be the last piece of your pain puzzle.

You Simply Don’t Know Where To Begin

You know you want to return to a full and active life, but it feels overwhelming and impossible. Pain has had you down for so long, reviving a full life seems out of the question anymore. A Pain coach can help you figure out where to begin, Breaking things down into bite-sized pieces yet focused on the whole, unlike a Physical therapist who is only focused on making you stronger.

You’re Unable To Define A Clear path to healing

All the opinions, imaging, and doctors visits – have left you confused and unsure of what to do next.  OR you have tried it all and it feels like three is nothing left to try.  A pain coach can help you refocus on what it means to heal. A coach is one who looks at the individual person – not a diagnosis – and because of that- can see things the rest of your medical team can not. Being outside of the silo is usually exactly what is needed to clear your path and get you on your way to a larger life.

Your Health, Relationships, or Career Is In Complete Chaos.

When our focus is solely on getting rid of the pain, the rest of our lives suffer. A coach can help you focus on what you need to reorganize, re-engage, and reprioritize your world. A pain coach can help you figure out what pieces you need to add back first, and how to do that in a way that minimizes flares.

You Get Easily Sidetracked By the Next possible solution.

I get it. I’ve been there. We all want the magic bullet. The one singular thing that will make us better. Working with a coach can help you stay on track with your goals and values around your life and pain while saving money on treatments that are ill-advised, or exploring ones that you might not have known about.

Limiting/False Beliefs Have Been Holding You Back

Most of the time, we find it difficult to follow through with things in life because, in our subconscious minds, we have limiting beliefs that are holding us back. A pain coach is instrumental in helping you to identify those limiting/false beliefs so that you can move forward rather than feeling left behind.

For example, if you’ve heard your entire life that pain must be damaged tissue, how can you possibly believe that you are safe to move? The story you’ve been telling yourself for years will override your ability to follow through. A pain coach can help you recognize and overcome these types of limiting/false beliefs.

“Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.” — Pete Carrol

Anxiety And Stress Are Recurring Themes

Life can get stressful. Plain and simple. I know that when I failed repeatedly to get control of my pain in the past, I went through some of the most anxious and stressful times in my life. I was depressed beyond belief. Even though I learned a lot, having those constant emotions become a recurring theme in your life isn’t fun whatsoever. It really causes issues with our nervous systems increasing our pain and suffering.

When you combine all of our responsibilities, from healing, and work to family and social lives, it’s easy to see why we get so stressed out. It’s not a good feeling, especially when it feels like the walls are caving in on you. Getting the perspective and outside help that pain coaching affords is integral in helping you get a handle on fear, stress, and anxiety.

Your Friends And Family Aren’t Supporting You

It’s hard to stay focused when you don’t have the support of the people around you. When your friends and your family members aren’t able to understand or support you, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. When we’re so busy dealing with negativity from all around us. How are we supposed to make progress and move forward?

However, your pain coach is there for you no matter what. They act as your support system. Even if friends and family aren’t sticking by you, you have them. Although it’s not free, it is well worth it. The experience and knowledge of some coaches are invaluable instruments in helping us achieve our goals.

You’re Completely Lost And Feel Like All Hope Is Gone

I once lost all my hope, pain had stolen everything. It happened slowly, failure after failure to get better. My life continued to shrink. I didn’t even want to go on. Those were some of the worst times in my life. I never want to revisit that place mentally or emotionally. I had lost who I was to my pain.

When you are at the bottom of the pit, you need someone there to help move you along. You need someone to help identify the issues that you’ve faced and the strength you have shown to date.  You need someone to help you uncover the essence of you!
