Untangling Thoughts and Emotions

Our emotions help to guide the decisions that we make every minute of our lives.

The world around us, the feelings inside us, and the thoughts in our heads trigger emotional reactions all the time. Much of what we do is motivated by a desire to hold on to good sensations/feelings or to avoid bad ones.

When you consciously suppress or unconsciously repress emotions, you’re creating a sense of danger within your nervous system. This can contribute to pain: mental and physical!

Get tools to help you stop your suffering. Be at peace within yourself, your world, & your pain.

Stories of Hope: For those who want to learn to live well with pain.

This two-part book provides real-life accounts of hope and helpful knowledge on the psychological and emotional dimensions of pain. In Part One, Amy, presents a collection of stories about people who have overcome significant chronic pain. These fourteen mini- memoirs, from guests on Amy’s podcast, “Restoring YOU” are inspiring stories of their pain journey, told in their own words. There truly is hope for improving your experience with persisting pain.

The second part explains key factors that magnify the challenges of coping with lingering physical limitations and pain. Giving insight into the path of returning to a more normal life—the goal of anyone living with the effects of a painful injury or illness. Besides simplifying principles of neuroscience, Amy provides everyday life suggestions, from how to advocate with your doctor to the importance of pacing.

Stories of Hope addresses the holistic aspects of pain that are typically neglected by healthcare providers—the cognitive, psychological, and emotional aspects of pain are addressed, with actionable steps. These aren’t the common suggestions of positive thinking or gritting-your-teeth while ignoring your perceptions. Instead, Amy introduces processes that can start you on the journey of improving your relationship with movement.

By reading the stories of other people’s pain journeys and learning what is really going in your body, you can change the trajectory of your chronic pain. Stories of Hope offers the inspiration and scientific insight to move ahead to a happier and more pain-free future.

Restoring Venus: A Journey from Chronic Pain to Possibilities

My Memoir, the story of my journey with pain

One moment she was gliding through water training for an NCAA swimming competition. The next moment she was writhing in pain on the tiled deck of the college pool.

Had a simple flip turn destroyed Amy Eicher’s athletic dreams?
In her memoir, Restoring Venus, Eicher recounts the emotional setbacks, a questionable surgery
and sexual abuse by a Christian youth group leader that ultimately shaped her understanding of
pain and enabled her unique approach to renewing her health.

Her confrontations with physicians who doubted her pain (“It’s all in your head”) are told with
raw candor. Her saving grace arrives when a gifted physical therapist promises to restore her.
Although the first attempt fails, the persistence of both eventually brings Eicher back to life as a
mother, public speaker / pain coach, and competitive swimmer.

“Although my burial did not last quite as long as Venus de Milo’s, my disappearance from
family and social life felt like an eternal curse.”

Eicher’s compassion for the plight of people living with chronic pain is evident in the narrative,
which compares the limits of the biomechanical medical approach with the success she has found
with a biopsychosocial understanding for the experience of pain.

Among her breakthroughs was mastering the art of listening to the diverse stories of patients. By
trusting that traumatized hearts and minds may harm lives as surely as broken bones, Eicher
came to understand how her own emotional history and a damaging secret contributed to her
travail and absolution.
